Aim of the Course

This two-day workshop will provide you with a thorough introduction of the main features of NVivo 11 Pro for Windows and  for Mac, using a sample data. You will learn how to setup a new project (Interview project and Literature review project); import data into the project, efficiently and effectively manage and capture the flow of ideas using annotations and memos. Code data into both Open codes and Hierarchical Nodes; classify your subjects and literature; explore and analyse your data using text searches and Word Cloud, Maps and queries. You will learn how to work with variety of data sources such as: interviews - individual and focus group; audio, video, photos, PDF files, social media contents (e.g. twitter, facebook), Evernote files, Excel spreadsheets, and bibliographic references from Endnote, Refwork, Mendeley, etc. You will also be shown how to use framework matrices. and also how to transcribe an audio or video file in NVivo.

Day 1:  Explore NVivo and Build a New NVivo Project

The first day is for the complete beginner or those who have use NVivo a little and wish to start again.

In this section you will learn to:

  • Explore how NVivo works through a sample project.
  • Create a new project from scratch. Learn to save it, password protect your project, and make backups.
  • Import different types of data e.g. documents, pdfs, photos, social media content, into the project.
  • Learn to transcribe audio and video files in NVivo.
  • You will also explore your data using keywords and phrases; simple and advance queries; and Word Cloud.
  • Create memos for field notes, reflective notes, supervision meeting notes, annotations, hyperlinks and See Also Links.
  • Code your data into Open Codes, and Hierarchical themes stored in a thematic coding framework folder.
  • You will also learn how to conduct literature review using NVivo, so bring some pdfs with you.

Day 2:  Further functions in NVivo 10

The second day is designed as a follow on from day1. You will classify your transcripts and datasets with demographics attributes, explore patterns in your data by using maps, and queries to ask questions and gathers finds for further analysis or for reporting.

In this section you will learn to:

  • Create cases of your sources (transcripts and dataset) and classify them by their demographic attributes and values.
  • Create relationship types and use to construct relationship nodes to code into.
  • Use a number of queries - coding, matrix and group queries to ask questions and gather coded references to answer them.
  • Organise your data into sets and search folders to filter your data for asking specific research questions.
  • Visualise your data using different maps - Mindmap, Project map, Concept map, Bar chart, etc.
  • Export analysed contents into Word for write up.
  • Produce various administrative reports of your project items.
  • Learn how to setup a group project involving a number of researchers or coders from different geographical locations, working on the same project.
  • Learn how to use Framework Matrices methodology.

Learning Support

Your tutor will require you to set-up the structure of your own project. You will be given individual time to receive feedback on your thematic coding structure to ensure that your coding structure will support in-depth data analyses. Your coding technique will be examined for relationship between themes.

Teaching Methods

The teaching method is mainly hands-on, supported by presentation, demonstration, encourage reflection, discussions, questions and answers, opportunity for  tips and insights to be shared, and clinic sessions for advice on your own data.

Recognition for Learning

You will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of the course.
